How much does SEO cost in 2026? What you pay each month and what you get
SEO is the only marketing line you pay every month and cannot see. There are no ads to show and no bought clicks to count, which makes it easy to overpay or to pay for nothing.
This guide explains what the price of SEO is made of, what each route costs and how to tell whether what you pay is working. With November 2026 prices taken from Google, Spain's statistics office (INE), Social Security and the tools' official pages. No rates copied from other agencies.
1. The short answer: three routes and what they cost
| Route | Cost | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | From €0 to about €250 a month in tools, plus your time | Anyone with a small site, little competition and hours to learn. |
| An in-house SEO | About €46,000 a year in cost to the company | Companies with a lot of content or several sites that need someone full time. |
| Outsource it | from €390/month (plus VAT where applicable) | Small businesses that want results without building a department. |
| Local SEO | from €290/month (plus VAT where applicable) | Businesses that depend on being found nearby, on Google Maps. |
The in-house cost is an estimate using INE's average salary for associate professionals and technicians (2024) plus 2026 Spanish employer contributions. Our prices are indicative starting points; the final amount goes in a proposal after the audit.
Google is almost the only door. According to StatCounter, in October 2026 93.29% of searches in Spain and 92.48% in Colombia were made on Google. So, in practice, talking about SEO means talking about Google.
And most small businesses do not compete there yet. According to INE, only 37% of Spanish companies with fewer than ten employees have a website, and according to Eurostat just 8.6% of Spanish microenterprises pay for internet advertising. Whoever works on SEO in a local sector usually faces little serious competition.
2. What you pay for when you pay for SEO
In its guide to choosing an SEO, Google describes what a professional does: review the site's content and structure, give technical advice, create content, manage campaigns to gain visibility, research the searches in your sector and also optimise for generative AI. In practice, monthly work splits like this:
- 01Technical SEO. Google can crawl and index the site, it loads fast and there are no errors. Done thoroughly at the start and monitored every month.
- 02Search research. Knowing what your customer types into Google and which pages are needed to answer them.
- 03Content. Creating and improving service, product and blog pages. Usually the part that takes the most hours.
- 04Links and reputation. Getting other sites to mention and link to you, without buying links.
- 05Local SEO. The Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent contact details across the internet.
- 06Measurement. Search Console, analytics and a report that says what changed, not just how many visits there were.
3. What the tools cost
Doing SEO seriously needs tools to see keywords, competitors and technical errors. These are the prices published by their makers:
| Tool | What it is for | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | See how Google sees you, which searches bring visits and what errors exist | Free |
| Google Business Profile | Appear on Google Maps and in the local pack | Free |
| Google Keyword Planner | See search volumes | Free, inside a Google Ads account |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Crawl the site and find technical errors | Free up to 500 URLs. £199 a year licence |
| Sistrix | Visibility, keywords and competitors | €99 to €599 a month on an annual contract, excluding VAT |
| Semrush | Keywords, competitors and audits | From $117.33 a month billed yearly |
| Ahrefs | Links, keywords and competitors | From $29 a month on the most basic plan. Full plans from $129 |
Prices from each maker's official page, checked on 5 November 2026. Semrush and Ahrefs do not state whether taxes are included.
Nobody needs them all. For a small business, Search Console, the Business Profile and one paid tool are usually enough. When you outsource SEO, the tools come with it, and that is a cost you save.
4. What an in-house SEO costs
There is no official statistic for an SEO technician's salary. The closest reference is INE's Annual Wage Structure Survey, published in May 2026 with 2024 data: the average salary in Spain was €29,540 gross a year, €34,917 for associate professionals and technicians and €45,514 for other technicians and professionals.
On top of the salary comes what the company pays to Social Security. In 2026, employer contributions on a permanent contract add up to 30.65%: 23.60% for common contingencies, 5.50% unemployment, 0.20% wage guarantee fund, 0.60% vocational training and 0.75% for the intergenerational equity mechanism. Then comes the occupational accident contribution, which depends on the activity.
| Reference profile (INE) | Gross annual salary | Cost to the company |
|---|---|---|
| Associate professional and technician | €34,917 | About €46,000 a year |
| Other technician and professional | €45,514 | About €60,000 a year |
Our own estimate with INE's 2024 average salary plus roughly 32% in contributions. Add tools, equipment and training time.
Having someone inside pays off when there is full-time work for one person all year. For a small business with a services website, it usually costs far more than outsourcing, and it depends on a single person.
5. What drives the monthly price up or down
- 01Site size. Monitoring ten pages is not the same as a store with thousands of products.
- 02Competition. Ranking for «lawyer in Madrid» takes more work than a niche search in a small town.
- 03Starting point. A slow, badly structured site or one with duplicate content needs months of fixes before it grows.
- 04Content. If pages and articles have to be written every month, it is the heaviest item.
- 05Geographic scope. One area, one country or several countries in several languages.
- 06What needs integrating. An online store, a changing catalogue or a site managed by another provider complicate the work.
That is why a fixed price without seeing the site is a bad sign. Either it includes almost nothing, or you will be charged later for what was left out.
6. How long it takes to work
Google gives no fixed timelines. In its SEO Starter Guide it says some changes may show within hours and others can take several months. On its page about whether you need an SEO, it recommends asking directly what results to expect and in what timeframe.
What can be known is what takes longer and what takes less:
| Change | When it usually shows |
|---|---|
| Fixing errors that stop the site being indexed | As soon as Google recrawls it, sometimes in days |
| Improving titles and descriptions | Weeks |
| Business Profile and reviews (local SEO) | Weeks or a few months |
| New pages for low-competition searches | One to a few months |
| Winning highly competitive searches | Several months or more |
General guidance. It depends on competition, the site's authority and how often Google crawls it.
7. SEO in the age of AI
Google's AI summaries change how many clicks reach websites. Pew Research Center analysed the real searches of 900 US adults in March 2025:
- When the page showed an AI summary, only 8% of visits ended in a click on a result, against 15% when there was none.
- Only 1% clicked on the links inside the summary itself.
- The summary appeared in 18% of searches, mostly for long questions.
Google maintains that organic click volume is relatively stable and that the clicks that arrive are higher quality, though it has not published the data. The prudent assumption is that informational searches bring fewer clicks and that searches by people wanting to hire or buy still lead to websites.
The good news is that nothing strange is needed. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the same SEO best practices apply. If you also want ChatGPT or Perplexity to cite you, that is GEO, and we explain it in how to appear in ChatGPT.
8. When cheap turns out expensive
Cheap SEO can turn out very expensive if it does what Google forbids. Its spam policies are public, and these are the ones most often seen in low-priced offers:
- Buying links. Paying with money, products or favours for a link that passes authority is spam to Google, unless the link is marked as sponsored. It can end in a manual action that sinks the site or removes it from results.
- Scaled content without value. Publishing hundreds of pages generated to catch searches, with AI or without, is scaled content abuse. With its March 2024 update, Google reported a 45% reduction in low-quality content in results.
- Expired domains. Buying an old domain to exploit its authority with unrelated content is also on the list.
Getting out of a manual action is not quick either. You must fix the problem and request a review, and Google warns that reviews can take several days or weeks.
9. What about Colombia?
With us, monthly SEO starts from COP 1,410,000 a month and local SEO from COP 1,050,000 a month, as indicative prices. They are the euro prices converted at the November 2026 rate and rounded.
In Colombia Google weighs almost as much as in Spain, with 92.48% of searches in October 2026 according to StatCounter. Bing reaches 5.31%, somewhat more than in Spain.
To compare with hiring someone, the 2026 minimum wage is COP 1,750,905 a month plus COP 249,095 transport allowance. Any salary carries social security, statutory benefits and, depending on the case, payroll levies, which raise the real cost to the company considerably. There are no official statistics on an SEO specialist's salary.
10. Ten questions before hiring SEO
Several of these questions are recommended by Google itself on its page about choosing an SEO:
- 01Can you show me examples of previous work?
- 02What exactly will you do each month?
- 03What results do you expect and in what timeframe?
- 04How will you measure them and what report will I receive?
- 05Do you follow Google's guidelines? Do you buy links?
- 06Does it include content? How many pages or articles a month?
- 07Who makes changes to the site, you or my provider?
- 08Do you have experience in my sector and area?
- 09What happens to the work done if I stop hiring you?
- 10Is there a minimum term? What happens if there are no results?
If someone cannot answer the second or the fifth clearly, keep looking.

Questions about how much does SEO cost in 2026? What you pay each month and what you get
It depends on site size, competition and how much content is needed. With us, monthly SEO starts from €390/month (plus VAT where applicable) and local SEO from €290/month (plus VAT where applicable). The final price goes in a proposal after a free audit.
With us, the initial audit is free and we hand it over even if you do not continue. If what you want is to know whether ChatGPT or Perplexity cite you, that is a GEO audit, which starts from €390 (plus VAT where applicable).
Yes, if you have a small site, little competition and time to learn. With Search Console, Google Business Profile and Google's SEO Starter Guide you can go a long way for free. When competition tightens or the site grows, outsourcing pays off.
Google gives no fixed timeline: some changes show within hours and others take several months. Fixing technical errors or the local profile usually shows sooner. Winning highly competitive searches takes considerably longer.
Because you rarely compare the same thing. Hours, whether content is included, whether links are included and how they are obtained, tools and reporting all differ. Very cheap SEO usually means little work or shortcuts that Google punishes.
They do not compete. Google Ads brings customers from day one but stops when you stop paying. SEO takes longer, but what you gain stays. What usually works best is starting with ads while SEO builds momentum.
Yes. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to appear in its AI summaries. What changes is that informational searches bring fewer clicks, so it pays to work the searches of people who want to hire and to make sure AI cites you.
With us, monthly SEO starts from COP 1,410,000 a month and local SEO from COP 1,050,000 a month, as indicative prices. The final price depends on the site and the competition.
