SEO for lawyers in 2026: how to rank on Google without trouble from your bar association
Almost everything published about SEO for lawyers is the same as for any business, swapping the word «store» for «firm». But a law firm is not a store. Google looks harder at legal topics, a lawyer's profile has its own rules and a normal marketing line can be an ethics breach.
This guide explains what works with the rules in hand: Google's guidelines, Spain's General Statute of the Legal Profession, its Code of Ethics and, for Colombia, Law 1123 of 2007. It also says what is not known, because some things have never been measured in Spain.
1. Does SEO really work for a law firm?
Let's start honestly. The classic route to clients in law is recommendation, and it remains very strong. The latest Spanish figure is old: in the Spanish Bar Council's 2008 external barometer, 77% of those who had seen a lawyer once were recommended by family or a friend, and the internet did not even register answers. The 2015 barometer, the last one, does not ask about this.
There is no recent official figure on how people search for a lawyer in Spain. The best current reference comes from the Legal Services Consumer Panel for England and Wales, which surveyed 3,802 users in 2026. It is not Spain, but it shows the order of magnitude:
| Route | Used it | Main route |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendation from family or friends | 25.9% | 18.2% |
| Own or family's previous use | 25.2% | 20.6% |
| Internet search | 18.4% | 11.5% |
| Referral from another organisation | 12.4% | 9.2% |
| Saw the local office | 11.5% | 6.3% |
| Comparison or review site | 9.0% | 3.8% |
| Advertisement | 7.3% | 4.0% |
Legal Services Consumer Panel, Tracker Survey 2026. Online panel. Main routes shown; a person may have used several.
The practical conclusion: SEO does not replace recommendation, it works on two fronts. It captures people with nobody to ask and confirms those already recommended to you, who usually search your name before calling. If nothing shows up there, or a site that inspires little confidence does, that recommendation can be lost. This last part is our reasoning, not a measured figure.
And competition is large. In December 2025 there were 154,417 practising lawyers in Spain, 44,883 of them in Madrid, and at the start of 2025 the national statistics office (INE) counted 83,943 legal activity companies. A high figure does not mean they all work on their websites: INE says only 37% of companies with fewer than ten employees have one, though that figure covers all sectors.
2. What people search for: the problem, not the area
According to the 2023 legal needs survey for England and Wales, with 17,668 adults, only 15% describe their problem as «legal». People do not think «I need employment law», they think «I've been fired». A site with only a page called «Employment law» misses many of those searches.
Data from Spain's General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) helps decide where to start, because it shows how many cases there are of each type:
| Case type | Number in 2025 | Change | Area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order-for-payment claims (debts) | 956,583 | −16.5% | Civil and commercial |
| Dismissal claims | 164,484 | +3% | Employment |
| Employment money claims | 131,150 | −4.3% | Employment |
| Separation and divorce claims | 84,424 | −11.7% | Family |
| Insolvencies | 74,739 | +30% | Insolvency and debt relief |
| Mortgage enforcements | 31,416 | +35.6% | Banking |
These are cases filed in court, not Google searches. They show the size of each problem and must be checked against search volumes in your area.
The growth in insolvencies stands out: 66,571 of the 74,739 are non-business individuals, up 36.3% on the previous year. It is the largest increase with an official figure, and a typical search by someone who knows nothing about law.
Urgent or planned: two websites in one
Urgent matters
Criminal, dismissal, arrest- Searched on mobile, in a hurry
- Little comparison: in criminal matters, only 23% compared options (LSCP)
- Visible phone, Business Profile and area matter most
- The page must say what to do now
- Deadlines rule: in Spain, 20 working days to react to a dismissal
Planned matters
Inheritance, commercial, immigration- Searched calmly and several times
- More comparison: price (57%) and reputation (52%) among those who compare (LSCP)
- Content, experience and the author's signature matter most
- The page must explain the process and costs
- Blog articles help you enter earlier
3. What Google expects from a legal website
Google has a category for topics that can seriously affect someone's health, safety or finances: YMYL («your money or your life»). Its September 2025 quality rater guidelines give more weight to trust on those topics. A clarification rarely made: the guidelines do not name legal advice as an example. A legal matter fits the definition, because it can affect your finances or freedom, but that is a reading of the definition, not a sentence from Google.
And another clarification. Rater assessments are not used directly for ranking, and Google says E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust) is not a specific ranking factor. Its systems look for signals that resemble it. In practice, that means this:
- 01Sign what you publish. Every article with the name of the lawyer who wrote or reviewed it, their bar association and membership number. Google's helpful content guide asks who created it, whether that is evident and why that person should be trusted.
- 02A profile for each lawyer. Education, membership, areas and publications. The rater guidelines explicitly list lawyers among professionals for whom reputation information can be expected.
- 03Cite the law and the date. Link to the official gazette, state the jurisdiction and update when the rule changes. An article about a deadline that no longer exists is worse than no article.
- 04Say who it applies to. A Stanford study of legal help searches in the US described poor-quality information and wrong-jurisdiction results. Stating the territory helps the reader, especially between Colombia and Spain, which share a language but not a law.
- 05Explain what it is not. An article informs, it does not advise on a specific case. Say so and offer a consultation.
What no longer works or never did
- FAQ markup to stand out. Google stopped showing that rich result on 7 May 2026. Questions remain useful for readers, but the markup no longer gives that appearance in results.
- Stars from your own reviews. If reviews are on your own site and you control them, Google does not show stars for them.
- The «LegalService» type as a shortcut. It is valid in schema.org, replacing the old «Attorney», but Google does not mention it in its local business documentation. Use it as the most specific subtype, without expecting any special effect.
4. One page per matter, and care with city pages
The structure that usually works is simple: one page per main area and, within each, pages for the most searched problems. For example, within employment, dismissal, money claims or harassment. Each must explain what is happening to the reader, what deadlines apply, what process follows and how fees work.
The most common mistake is copying the same page and changing the city name. Google calls it doorway abuse, and its spam policies explicitly cite pages targeting regions or cities that funnel everyone to the same place. City pages are not banned and there is no maximum number. What gets punished is pages that add nothing of their own.
A city page that adds value
Yes- Explains where the matter is filed in that city
- There is a real lawyer or office there
- Includes local data or procedures
- Shows the address and how to get there
A doorway page
No- Same text with another city
- A city you do not serve
- A hundred towns created at once
- All lead to the same form and add nothing
5. A firm's Business Profile
When someone searches «employment lawyer» on mobile, they usually see the map before websites. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay to improve there. What is in your hands is following the guidelines, which have specific rules for lawyers:
| Situation | What Google says |
|---|---|
| Several lawyers at one office | The firm has its profile, and each client-facing lawyer can have their own, with only their name and not the firm's. |
| A sole lawyer with a brand | Better a single shared profile, in the format «Brand: Lawyer's name». |
| Several specialities | No separate profiles for each one. |
| The name | The real one, as on the sign and website. Adding «divorce lawyers Madrid» is not allowed and can suspend the profile. |
| Virtual office or mailbox | Not eligible. |
| Coworking | Only with clear signage, seeing clients during hours and with your own staff. |
| No clients at the premises | Service area with the address hidden. The area should not exceed about two hours' drive. |
| By appointment only | Google lists these among businesses that should not show hours. Review it according to how you see clients. |
Guidelines for representing your business on Google, checked on 5 November 2026.
If you work remotely and serve clients across the country, this matters. Without a real office you will not enter each city's map, and it is better not to try with a rented address. There, content does the work.
To go deeper, we have a guide to local SEO and Google Maps.
6. Reviews and professional secrecy
Reviews help prominence and decisions. Google says more reviews and better ratings can help in local results. And in England and Wales, 14% of those choosing an adviser looked for reviews. Research for the British competition authority also found that reviews on a firm's own website are seen as more promotional than reliable.
What Google allows and what it does not
- You can ask clients for a review with a Google link or QR code.
- You cannot give anything in return, neither discounts nor free services.
- You cannot ask only happy clients or discourage negative reviews.
- You cannot post fake reviews or leave them from your own accounts.
Replying without confirming anything
Here is the problem rarely mentioned. Google advises replying, personalising and addressing the author by name. But a lawyer has a duty of secrecy, and publicly confirming that someone is a client, or going into the facts of their matter, can be a problem even if the review is unfair.
7. What cannot be published in Spain
Lawyers can advertise freely, under article 19 of the General Statute. But article 20 of that Statute and article 6 of the Code of Ethics set limits, and a website, an article or a Google profile all count as advertising.
| Rule | Example that clashes | How to do it |
|---|---|---|
| No promising results | «We win your case», «get your money back for sure» | Explain the process and experience without guaranteeing the outcome. |
| No inciting litigation | «Dismissed? Sue now» | «What you can do if you have been dismissed and what deadlines apply». |
| No citing clients without written authorisation | A case with names or recognisable, or a logo | Get written authorisation or publish cases with no identifying data. |
| Respect professional secrecy | Details that make the matter recognisable | Change and generalise the facts, revealing nothing covered by secrecy. |
| Accredited specialisation | «Specialist» with no backing | Only with degrees, approved courses or long practice to support it. |
| No targeting recent victims | Ads and pages about a specific accident | Never before 45 days, unless the person expressly asks. |
| Identify the bar association | Site or ad without it | State the bar association in advertising and the number on the lawyer's profile. |
| No covert advertising | Sponsored article that does not say so | Visibly mark whatever is advertising. |
| No bar emblems | Crests or symbols that confuse | Use only your brand. |
Royal Decree 135/2021 (General Statute of the Legal Profession), arts. 19 and 20, and 2019 Code of Ethics, art. 6. The examples are ours. This is not legal advice: if in doubt, consult your bar association.
The consequences are real. Advertising in breach of article 20 is a serious offence, with suspension from over 15 days up to a year or a fine of €1,001 to €10,000. Targeting victims is very serious. In addition, the site's legal notice must include the bar association and membership number under Spain's e-commerce law (LSSI), whose fines can reach €30,000 for a minor infringement.
This includes whoever does your SEO. An agency unaware of these rules can, with good intentions, write a page that gets you in trouble. And the content goes out under your name.
8. AI content and Google's summaries
Google does not ban content made with the help of AI, as long as it adds value and is not made to manipulate rankings. What it does punish is mass publishing of pages without value, with AI or without. On a legal topic, an error can also cost the reader and you dearly. AI can serve as a draft, but a lawyer has to review and sign the result.
On AI summaries, there is no reliable data specific to legal searches in Spain or elsewhere that we can trust. There is a general Pew Research study in the US: with an AI summary on the page, clicks on results drop from 15% to 8%. It is reasonable to think that an informational query («how much is dismissal compensation») gets answered more within Google itself, and that a hiring query («employment lawyer in Madrid») still leads to websites. That is a hypothesis, not a measurement.
Google says there are no special requirements to appear in these summaries. The same good practices apply. If you also want to know whether AI assistants recommend you, we cover it in how to appear in ChatGPT.
9. SEO, Google Ads and marketing for lawyers: what each costs
SEO and advertising are two different services that complement each other. You do not have to choose forever, but you should know what each one does:
| SEO | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| When it works | Some changes in hours, others in several months | From the moment the campaign goes live |
| What you pay | The monthly work | Management and each click |
| If you stop paying | What you gained lasts a while but fades | Ads disappear |
| Best for | Problem searches and content | Urgent matters and getting started |
| With us | from €390/month (plus VAT where applicable) | from €290/month (plus VAT where applicable), excluding ad spend |
Our prices are indicative starting points; the final amount goes in a proposal. Local SEO: from €290/month (plus VAT where applicable).
What to know about Google Ads
- We found no general Google Ads policy for legal services. The normal ones apply, along with your bar association's ethics rules.
- Criminal defence is in a sensitive category: you cannot use your own audiences or client lists.
- Debt management ads have their own requirements. In Spain, Google asks for registration as an insolvency administrator and verification, and Colombia is not on the list of allowed countries. If you advertise Spain's debt relief law (Segunda Oportunidad), check first whether this affects you.
- What applies to the site applies to the ad: no promising results.
For the detail, we have a guide on how much SEO costs and another on how much a website costs. And a website for lawyers starts from €990 (plus VAT where applicable).
10. What about Colombia?
Google's technical side is the same, but the ethics rules are not. Article 31.1 of Law 1123 of 2007 treats as an offence against professional decorum any advertising not limited to a closed list: the lawyer's name, academic degrees and specialisations, positions held, matters handled preferentially or exclusively and professional address details.
So what can you do? An article explaining a procedure, with no praise of the lawyer, is information and should not be advertising, although the line is undefined. That is why useful content and a sober profile with the permitted list are the reasonable path in Colombia. Also avoid intermediaries paid to bring clients through shared fees, which article 30.5 treats as an offence.
There is unmet demand. According to Colombia's statistics office (DANE), 14% of adults had a justiciable problem in 2022 and 2023, and 48.9% of problems saw no action. Among those who acted, only 8% used a private lawyer, up from 5.5% in the previous measurement. Competition is also huge, with 425,016 lawyers in 2025 according to Corporación Excelencia en la Justicia data reported in the press.
With us, monthly SEO starts from COP 1,410,000 a month and local SEO from COP 1,050,000 a month, as indicative prices. We work remotely, and can travel if needed.
11. Where to start
- 01Review the legal side. Legal notice with bar association and number, cookies and forms. And read your site with article 6 of the Code beside you.
- 02Look at your data. Open Search Console: free and with your real searches.
- 03Tidy up the Business Profile. Real name, real office, correct category and lawyer profiles if they make sense.
- 04Build lawyer profiles. With bar association, number, education and areas.
- 05Pick two or three areas. Those that interest you most and have demand in your area. Not all at once.
- 06Write the problem pages. One per matter, with deadlines, process and fees, signed.
- 07Ask all clients for reviews, when appropriate and without giving anything in return.
- 08Review each quarter. What is rising, what is not, and what has changed in the law.
It is constant work, but there is no mystery. And done this way, the site brings you clients without putting you in a tight spot with your bar association.

Questions about SEO for lawyers in 2026: how to rank on Google without trouble from your bar association
It depends on the areas, the location and how much content is needed. With us, monthly SEO starts from €390/month (plus VAT where applicable) and local SEO from €290/month (plus VAT where applicable). The final price goes in a proposal after a free audit.
Yes. Spain's General Statute recognises free advertising, within limits: no promising results, inciting litigation, revealing secrets or citing clients without written authorisation, and the bar association must be stated. In Colombia, Law 1123 of 2007 is considerably more restrictive.
In Spain, only if backed by academic or professional degrees, approved specialisation courses or long professional practice, under article 6.4 of the Code of Ethics and 20.3 of the Statute.
In Spain, naming a client or making them recognisable requires written authorisation, and you can never reveal anything covered by secrecy or promise results. The prudent option is cases with no identifying data. In Colombia, the closed list in Law 1123 makes it a risk.
Without confirming that the person is a client or going into the facts. Thank them for the comment, explain that professional secrecy prevents you discussing any matter there and offer a private channel. For a sensitive case, consult your bar association.
Yes, if they are client-facing and can be reached at that office. The firm has its profile and each lawyer their own, with only their name. No separate profiles for each speciality, and virtual offices are not allowed.
Yes, if it adds something of its own: where matters are filed, who handles them and data for that city. If only the city name changes, Google may treat it as a doorway page, which breaches its spam policies.
Google gives no fixed timeline: some changes show within hours and others take several months. The Business Profile and low-competition searches usually respond sooner. Ranking for «lawyer» in a big city takes much longer.
