What is Dolibarr and which companies is it right for?
Dolibarr is less known than Odoo or Holded, but it has been handling small-business management for many years. It is an open-source ERP and CRM that runs on your own server and adapts by enabling only the modules you need.
If you want something simple, with no per-user licences and your data under your control, it is worth knowing.
What Dolibarr is
It is open-source business software (GPL licence) written in PHP. It is installed on a server or hosting and used from the browser. Its architecture is modular: you enable third parties, quotes, orders, invoices, stock or projects depending on what you use.
Beyond its standard modules there is a marketplace of extra modules (DoliStore) and a REST API to connect it to other tools.
What you can manage with it
The essentials of a small trading or services business:
- ✓Customers, suppliers and opportunities (CRM).
- ✓Quotes, orders, delivery notes and invoices.
- ✓Products, warehouses and stock movements.
- ✓Projects, tasks and time.
- ✓Point of sale for a physical shop.
Strengths
No licence cost, your data on your server and no per-user subscription. It is light, quick to learn and easy to extend with your own development when needed.
Limits
For very complex processes (advanced manufacturing, many companies or warehouses with sophisticated rules) it falls shorter than an ERP like Odoo. And being self-hosted, someone has to look after the server, updates and backups.
When is it worth it, and what does it cost?
It suits small businesses and freelancers who want to organise sales and stock with a simple tool and no licences. If your operation is more complex, we will tell you plainly whether another ERP makes more sense.
The software has no licence cost; the cost comes from hosting and implementation work. Every project is quoted once we know the detail, but as a reference a Dolibarr implementation starts from €690 (plus VAT where applicable).
Questions about what is Dolibarr and which companies is it right for?
The software is open source and free. You pay for the server it runs on and, if you need them, implementation, customisation and support.
Yes, through available modules or by connecting its REST API to your store, for example with n8n workflows.
Dolibarr for small companies that want something simple and under their control; Odoo when you need a broader system coordinating many areas.
